2019 Clean Days Kickoff Recap

In 2019, nearly 400 volunteers came together over two days of kickoff events to start our spring off right – despite the rain on Earth Day!

On Earth Day, April 22, 2019, nearly 300 volunteers turned out to pick up litter along Promenade St and Kinsley Avenue and plant over 80 trees. A stellar group from Year Up! joined our friends from the Department of Environmental Management, IGT, Coke, and T-Mobile to tackle this stretch of river. Another crew, including volunteers from United Way of RI, Nowell Academy, and Burrilville High School made big moves at Donigian Park! Wildflour Vegan Bakery and the Manton Ave Dunkin’ provided a delicious breakfast! Our long-time donors and generous friends at Olneyville NY System and Vasillio’s provided lunch for the brave volunteers who continued to work through rain and shine!

We were blown away by the turnout at our Community Clean Days Kickoff on the 27th! A fantastic group of over 100 volunteers cleaned the riverbanks, spruced up the playgrounds, and weeded the living fences in record time. Many thanks to the United Way of RI, the Land and Water Sovereignty Campaign, Cox, Brady Sullivan, and One Neighborhood Builders for supporting this work and our community. Our friends at the Partnership for Providence Parks sponsored this cleanup and provided healthy snacks! Lunch generously donated by Wes’s Ribhouse, with dessert from Wildflour Vegan Bakery . Thanks to all who came out to help – Riverside Park looks better than ever! One last special thanks to the Partnership for Providence Parks, Mayor Jorge Elorza, SustainPVD, Providence Parks Department, and Providence Urban Wildlife Refuge Partnership for their support of Annual Earth Day Cleanups across the City of Providence!

2018 Clean Days Kickoff Recap

In 2018, we celebrated 25 years of restoration and revitalization along the Woonasquatucket River Greenway. Hundreds of volunteers came together over two days of kickoff events. We celebrated the on-going work of making the River a thriving state asset.

On April 13, 2018, over 150 volunteers gathered near downtown Providence to celebrate our 25th anniversary. We began the day with an amazing rally. We had speakers such as:

Volunteers worked in groups on the downtown river. They cleaned litter, installed fence to prevent litter, and pulled debris from the river. They also painted mini-murals and benches, and removed graffiti. The day wrapped with a free lunch courtesy of Wes’s Rib House!

On April 28, 2018, 180 volunteers continued the work as part of Providence’s Annual Earth Day Spring Cleaning! Volunteers worked on areas in three Providence parks along the Greenway. Projects included hand-painting signs and barrels, picnic tables, benches and arbors. Volunteers also spruced up playground equipment and play surfaces, mulched gardens and trees. And of course, they cleaned litter around the park and along the river banks.
